Grad Advice – Why become a Community Clinician?

2021 Graduate Program Banner 3 blog

2021 Graduate Program

Community Clinicians get the best of both worlds.

After years of study you are reaching an exciting time in your health professional career – it’s time to graduate and start working.

The difficult decision you now face is where to start your career? Hospital – Rehabilitation Centre – Private Practice OR a career that offers the best of both worlds as a Community Clinician.

Community Benefits:

• Keep your weekends for you! Follow a 9-5 structure with regular clients with whom you can build rewarding relationships and achieve short and long term goals
• Autonomous work environment visiting a variety of clients with different conditions and needs.
• Escape the four walls of an office, enjoy your lunch breaks in a park or by the beach!
• Work with other clinicians and client’s family in a friendly and collaborative environment to deliver the best quality care.

Many of our Empower Healthcare clinicians began their careers in private practice and hospitals, and are now thriving after moving into the community setting. This is thanks to reduced caseload stress, flexible hours and building lasting and productive relationships with their clients.

After 8 years full time working in private practice I needed to make a change to restore my work/life balance. Working for Empower in the community setting enables me to maintain a variety within my clinical caseload and challenge my skills while reclaiming my evenings and weekends for myself – James, Physiotherapist

Why choose Empower?

1. Induction and Orientation Program – a structured orientation plan including shadowing our senior clinicians to give you the support you need to get started
2. Mentoring and Peer learning – partner up with and learn valuable skills from a senior clinician
3. Monthly online team meetings including professional development presentations and case discussions
4. Regular check-ins with your area team leader to ensure you are getting the support you need and work through any concerns you may have
5. A dedicated support team to assist with your schedule, allowing you to focus on being a health professional

6. No pressure to over service or discharge clients before they are ready, make your own clinical decisions

I love that Empower is always adapting, growing and progressing, signs of a good company, where everyone wants to work  – Olivia, Physiotherapist

Grad Advice – Interview Process and Tips

2021 Graduate Program Banner 4 blog

and hopefully welcome you to the Empower family.

Congratulations your application has been received! But what comes next during the Empower interview process?

First Stage

A phone screen will be conducted by our People and Culture team, so be prepared for questions such as;

– What do you know about Empower Healthcare?
– What interested you in applying for Empower Healthcare?
– Areas of particular interest in your field
– Career goals and plans
– Availability and salary expectation

Second Stage

The second stage interview will be with the hiring manager either face-to-face or online via MS TEAMS. Along with excessive baking and overhauls of fitness gear, online interviews have become the latest trend.  Just like any other job interview, the etiquette remains the same.

Our online interview tips are:

– If you can’t make an interview, always call through and let someone know so we can reschedule
– Log on a few minutes earlier to test your connection, audio, and visuals
– There are options on MS Teams to change your background if you don’t want the interviewer to see what’s behind you
– Set yourself up in a quiet room with no distractions
– Dress to impress – top half at least

This second stage is more about your working style and for both yourself and the hiring manager to get to know one another. The questions will be around your previous experiences and how you react in different circumstances, such as;

– How you deal with difficult situations/people?
– Organisational and planning skills and types of techniques you use?
– High pressured situations examples and how you deal with them
– What are your career goals and interest areas?

You will be provided with a detailed overview of the Empower Graduate Program and timings. It is just as important for you to ask questions so you can learn more about the company and if it is the right fit for you.

Tips for graduates

– Come prepared with questions that are important to you
– Set out your own expectations for your graduate year
– Honesty is the best policy – if you have other job offers, do let us know and also be transparent with the other companies
– The hiring manager would usually be the person who will be your mentor or manager, if not, it’s ok to ask to meet some of the members of the team

At Empower Healthcare we believe that our strength lies in our people, so be your open and honest self during the interview process, as we will be with you and hopefully welcome you to the Empower family.

Jovita So, Occupational Therapist Reflects on Empower’s Graduate Program

In February 2021, I started my career as a graduate occupational therapist at Empower Healthcare. As you can imagine, Home Care clients have found dealing with the pandemic very challenging, especially those who live alone. I had a client who had been discharged from the hospital and her daughter was very distressed as she could not visit her during lockdown. Initially, the client was guarded and anxious. By actively listening to their story and concerns, I was able to identify the fall risks and provide suitable options and recommendations that were received with relief and happiness in reducing their fears around falling, while increasing quality of life.

I realise that my role as an occupational therapist can be more important and influential than I once thought. It is very rewarding when clients thank me with a big sincere smile! I now know that being an occupational therapist is one of the best decisions I have made.

Emma, Occupational Therapist Reflects on Empower’s Graduate Program

Emma Austin, Occupational Therapy Graduate Reflects on Empower's Graduate Program

“I knew that Occupational Therapy was a broad field, however I didn’t realise how diverse it can be until working in the community. I feel privileged that I am able to help client’s remain safe and independent, and reach their goals through the interventions and recommendations I give.” Emma Austin, 2021 OT Graduate.

I started with Empower Healthcare in January 2021 as a part of their Graduate Program. I was worried having just graduated from university that I would be thrown into the deep end. However, since I have joined Empower, I have never felt more supported throughout my entire journey.

A moment that has stood out to me was during one of the shadowing sessions with my mentor. We completed a joint session with the client’s family and carers to teach them how to correctly and safely complete hoist transfers. It was a great session, and throughout we were all having fun and laughing. The client had a smile on his face the entire time. My mentor was very happy at the end of the session, as in previous meetings, the client was always quiet and appeared sad. It was a great feeling to know that we were able to make the client smile.

A Day in the Life of a Homecare Physiotherapist

Day in the Life Website Body

A Day in the Life of a Homecare Physiotherapist 2

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a home care physiotherapist is like? We go behind the scenes with physiotherapist Patrick Jones, to explore what a typical day looks like for a home care physio and answer a few questions that you may have about becoming one.

Getting Ready:

My typical morning routine for the day is waking up at about 8am or 8:30am (a nice sleep in compared to my wife who has to leave at 7am for the hospital) and getting ready for the day. I officially start at 9am from home (if I don’t have a patient at 9am) and check my schedule for the day while drinking a coffee at home. This includes confirming the client’s names, conditions and address’ I will be seeing as well as answering any emails or printing any paperwork such as HEP.

Going to work:

The joy of community physiotherapy is being able to start at home and the varied environments you travel to from rehabilitation centres, client’s homes, nursing homes or independent living units. Empower ensures to provide clients where possible close to your surrounding area which means not too much driving but enough for a good podcast throughout the day!

Lunch:

During the day you get an allocated lunch break and since you are on the road you get to have a choice of amazing food options. Alternatively, you can also pack lunch and bring it on the road. I find it’s nice either way to stop at a park or beach and enjoy the food which is one of the big perks of working in homecare. Occasionally when we have a meeting you may even be able to score a free lunch.

Treating Clients:

During my typical day I am expected to see six clients, a combination of new referrals and follow up clients. One of the best parts of community is the diversity of conditions and clients we get to see. In a typical day I could see an orthopaedic client recently discharged from rehab, a NDIS participant, a client with Parkinson’s and an elderly client who is at risk of falls. This allows me to continue to grow and develop my skills in a number of physiotherapy clinical areas.

The aspect of home care I find the most rewarding is that we can focus on the client’s goals in their own environment. Unlike hospitals where the aim is to get them to a safe mobility for discharge, in the community we get to help the client return to their most optimised self. This means that we collaborate and partner together to achieve agreed goals.

For example, Linda is a 65 year old female who has had 3 falls in the past which has caused her to be too afraid to leave her house. Her main goal was to be able to leave the house and walk to the local shops. By implementing short term goals with an exercise program focused on balance, lower limb strengthening and mobility, Linda was empowered to build back her confidence. Together we were then able to practice her outdoor walking and preferred route to the shops. Linda is now feeling more self-assured about her walking and with ongoing practice and progress, believes she will be able to soon walk independently.

Team Environment:

Every fortnight the national physiotherapy team meet online. This is a great chance to receive ongoing professional development, bounce ideas off one another as well as meet the rest of the team and participate in fun social activities. As the Sydney team we also meet once a fortnight for coffee and case discussion. This allows us, as a smaller team to debrief on any complex cases over a coffee. Part of your training also includes a trip to the Melbourne head office, if you time it well you might be able to catch a game, Go Giants!

Developing talented employees

Blog post2 Developing talented employees

People are the heart and soul of Empower. So, as an allied health care organisation, Empower invests heavily in developing talented employees in the same way a product business concentrates on improving its features and performance.

Behind Empower is a team of great leaders that motivate, encourage, support and professionally develop our clinicians into talented employees that flourish with each passing year.
In this blog, we talk with Mark Ngau, South-East Regional Manager, to learn how he supports his team members from graduates, right through to senior clinicians.

Creating a Healthy Culture

“A healthy culture is the backbone to supporting and developing employees. I like to create an engaged and meaningful environment where every team member has a sense of purpose and is involved in interesting and valuable work.

Some people are too quick to judge the aged care sector. Having previously been in the public hospital system and experienced a solid stint in private practice, I can strongly claim that aged care is a rewarding and gratifying career that provides ample opportunities to treat and support a comprehensive range of conditions. You can make a tremendous difference to a person’s quality of life and achieve real personal satisfaction through your work.

I make a point of making sure every graduate fully understands the importance of their role and how their efforts make the world a better place for someone else. When this has been truly realised, I find that on an individual level, my team members are happier, more engaged, and more creative.

I love a highly-energised team spirit, so I lead by a few basic principles; I am always available for a conversation, I am more than happy to have one-on-one technical discussions, I encourage my staff to use me as a sounding board for recommended treatment plans, I will always return a phone call or text on the same day, and believe the team should have lunch together.

Creating a sense of belonging fuels team spirit and productivity because it aids open and meaningful conversation, the avoidance of unnecessary conflict, and maximises the effective use of each members skills and knowledge.”

Mentoring Employees

“My role as a Regional Manager is both challenging and satisfying. As a Regional Manager, I am involved predominantly in workforce planning and ensuring that our therapy services meet our client’s expectations. But my greatest satisfaction lies in supporting and mentoring my team members in their respective roles.

I feel that the best way to effectively support and mentor my team is by providing direct guidance and feedback. At Empower, we work very closely with each team member to co-create individual, professional development programs with tailored goals to set a learning framework.

The Regional Managers then collectively build weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly professional development plans that addresses both team and individual skill development so we can help each person reach their full potential and empower our team members to be capable of working efficiently and independently.
We use different learning environments to mentor, engage and stimulate each employee. I might encourage a graduate to shadow a senior clinician during an unusual or complex treatment. At other times, I will sit in on a treatment to observe and offer myself as a sounding-board during an assessment or treatment. I have personally found when you create a positive learning environment, inquisitive questions can be answered, doubts can be stamped out, knowledge grown, and confidence gained.

When a clinician acts on that feedback and is motivated to learn more, that’s when you start to see potential developed and talent grow. Improvement in skills and capabilities are always noticed and this often leads to the door opening for promotion opportunities.

A great testament to our mentoring is with our recent graduate Kendall Sutton. He started this year with Empower (2019) and within 6 months, was promoted to Site Leader. Kendall took every opportunity to actively participate in professional development workshops, listened to our feedback and put our constructive feedback into practice. He was like a sponge, absorbing every bit of knowledge possible, practicing new technical elements and committed to accomplishing his individual learning goals. Kendall took on any challenge and stretched himself by participating in organisation activities, naturally leading by example. It was when he was able to put his own spin on treatments and suggest new processes to improve Empower as a whole, we knew Kendell was destined to become a future leader and promoted to Site Leader.”

Providing A Bright Future for Developing Talented Employees

“Graduates are a core part of the Empower family. They bring a fresh perspective, drive, passion and a thirst for knowledge. However, with that drive for success, comes a desire to have a job with a purpose. I am very aware that if minds are not engaged and constantly learning, they’ll move elsewhere.

Empower embraces quality and innovation as its core values. I am committed to giving all team members the opportunity to grow their skills based on industry demands, and in turn promoting job satisfaction for both a graduate and me, knowing I am nurturing future innovators for the aged care industry.”

Advice to a Potential New Grad

“The best advice I can give is to explore different clinical or practice areas for a solid period of time, with 12 months as a minimum.

Everybody’s journey both in life and career is different, so there is little to be gained by measuring your worth by comparing yourself to your peers.

Whichever area of practice you decide on, make the most of your time at the organisation by gaining experience and skills that may potentially be of use in your own future e.g. be actively involved in conducting education sessions for peers/staff/families to improve your public speaking.”

Tips to Nail Your Resume & Interview

You’ll need to demonstrate in your resume and during your job interview that no one else is better suited for the job. Learn how to prepare your resume so you stand out from the crowd and adopt interviewing techniques that leave a lasting impression.

Learn how to demonstrate in your resume and during your job interview that one else is better suited for the graduate program position.

Resume Writing

Your resume provides the first opportunity for you to sell yourself and first impressions matter! So don’t underestimate how important it is to have a good resume. Below are some resume writing tips that will help your application stand out:

1. Format

Your resume should be easy to read and look professional. Use Arial or Times New Roman fonts, size 10 or 12 and keep the colour neutral. Start by following these subheadings:

  • An introduction or objective statement
  • Your work experience and achievements
  • Your education and study accomplishments
  • Interests (Optional)
  • Your referees

2. Tailor your resume to the role you want

  • Keep the content highly relevant to the skills required for this position.
  • Pay attention to the introduction and ensure that information is regularly updated to reflect your current situation (eg. Seeking a casual role in retail while studying may not work in your favour when applying for a graduate program).
  • List your most recent experience first and then work your way back down the list. Feel free to include past jobs that are not related to your current field of study, however keep it brief. It’s best to provide more detail on relevant placements/internships you have completed.

3. Highlight your achievements

Instead of just listing your responsibilities in each role, highlight at least 1 achievement under each role and the results you achieved.

As a student, if you were involved in any extracurricular activities or volunteer work make sure you highlight these too!

4. Keep it simple

Only include relevant information and try to keep it within 2 pages.

5. Proofread and edit

Attention to detail is important so check for spelling and grammar mistakes. Ask for someone else to read over your resume, they may pick up something you have missed.

Interviewing Techniques

There’s interview preparation. And then there’s REALLY preparing for the interview. It’s the latter that will get you the job.

Also, the better prepared you are, the more relaxed and comfortable you will be when the questions begin. Here’s a few interview tips and suggestions to supercharge your preparation.

1. Research the company

Look up the company website and social media to obtain background information on the company. This shows that you are serious about the role and also allows you to prepare relevant questions for your interviewers. If possible, also obtain the names and position titles of the interviewers prior to the interview.

2. Consider personal presentation

Dress appropriately. Ask the recruiter what the dress standards are for this company or if in doubt dress “business professional”.

3. Don’t be late!

Prior to attending the appointment make sure you check and confirm address details, check if there is parking nearby or public transport. Always allow extra time for traffic and if you are running late let the recruiter know.

4. Take relevant documents

Bring in any documentation that you feel will support your application. This can include a resume, written references, testimonials, certificates, awards…

5. Prepare questions

An interview is also an opportunity for you to find out if this is the right role for you so come prepared with relevant questions.

6. Interview questions

Be prepared to give well thought out and clear responses to interview questions. Provide more than one-word responses when required but also pick up on the interviewer’s cues and don’t go into too much unnecessary detail. You may also be asked behavioural / competency-based interview questions so be prepared to provide some real-life examples from your previous work/placements.

7. Attitude is everything

Sometimes a positive attitude is more important than your work experience! Showing a genuine interest in the company, demonstrating a willingness to learn, and being friendly will also help you stand out in the process.
